Basketball fans can travel to Sackville this week to witness the eight best Canadian university and college men’s basketball teams.

Mount Allison University is hosting the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s national championship.

This is the first time Mount Allison has hosted the national men’s championship following the success of the national women’s championship in 2018.

The host Mount Allison Mounties will be joined by:

  • Vancouver Island University Mariners of Nanaimo, B.C.
  • Keyano College Huskies of Fort McMurray Alta.
  • Humber College Hawks of Toronto, Ont.
  • Vanier College Cheetahs of Montreal, Que.
  • Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics of Halifax, N.S.
  • Camosun College Chargers of Victoria, B.C.
  • George Brown College Huskies of Toronto, Ont.

The tournament begins Wednesday at Mount Allison’s McCormack Gymnasium and concludes with the bronze and gold medal games on Saturday.

Mount Allison will play on Wednesday at 8 p.m. against the Vanier Cheetahs.

“This championship is the first national sporting event hosted by the university since the pandemic and our entire team is eager to showcase the new gymnasium, our campus, and the town of Sackville while hosting Canada’s best CCAA men’s basketball teams,” said Jacques Bellefleur, director of athletics and recreation.

The tournament will also feature the annual CCAA national awards banquet, where coach of the year, player of the year, and all-Canadian awards will be presented.

Norval McConnell, chair of the tournament organizing committee and a former Mounties basketball player in the late 1970s, said the university and organizing committee are honoured to host the event.

“After successfully hosting the 2018 CCAA Women’s Basketball Championships, we are proud to host at the new upgraded McCormack Gymnasium. To the visiting teams, welcome to the heart of the Maritimes at Mount Allison,” said McConnell.
