New Brunswick saw a spike in influenza activity near the end of February, according to Public Health data.

The latest Respiratory Watch report showed 14 hospitalizations and one ICU admission recorded between Feb. 25 and March 2.

That was up from zero hospitalizations the previous week and followed several weeks of decreases.

  • Age 0-4: Zero hospitalizations and ICU admissions
  • Age 5-19: Two hospitalizations, zero ICU admissions
  • Age 20-44: Zero hospitalizations and ICU admissions
  • Age 45-64: Four hospitalizations, zero ICU admissions
  • Age 65+: Eight hospitalizations, zero ICU admissions

There were 120 confirmed cases of influenza, up from 89, and the test positivity rate increased to 11 per cent from eight per cent.

Officials reported one new influenza-like illness outbreak in schools and one lab-confirmed influenza outbreak in a nursing home.

On the COVID front, there were 12 hospitalizations but no ICU admissions during that same week. That was compared to 30 hospitalizations the week before.

  • Age 0-4: Zero hospitalizations and ICU admissions
  • Age 5-19: Zero hospitalizations and ICU admissions
  • Age 20-44: Zero hospitalizations and ICU admissions
  • Age 45-64: One hospitalization, zero ICU admissions
  • Age 65+: 19 hospitalizations, zero ICU admission

There were 74 confirmed cases, compared to 80 the week before, and the test positivity rate remained stable at six per cent.

However, the actual number of new cases is likely much higher as PCR tests are only available when requested by a primary care provider.

A total of five lab-confirmed outbreaks were declared in nursing homes.

No deaths were reported from either COVID or influenza, according to Public Health.
