Province helps out Cat Lake

The provincial government says it is providing support to Cat Lake following a fire that destroyed its nursing station earlier this week.

Ministry of Northern Development Parliamentary Assistant Kevin Holland says Minister Greg Rickford was quick to reach out to the community.

Holland says space at a Ministry of Natural Resources building has also been provided to set up a temporary nursing station.

“Additional nurses and emergency medical equipment have already been sent to the community. We continue to monitor the situation, and we will continue to work with community members and partners in Cat Lake to address this tragic situation,” says Holland.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones says she also reached out to the community, speaking with Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler last Sunday.

“I immediately made a phone call to the federal minister, Mark Holland, to share how we can work together to make sure that the citizens of Cat Lake are protected and continue to provide health care,” says Jones.

Chief Russell Wesley says they have juggled resources as best they can to maintain medical care in the community.

Some residents requiring advanced medical care have been evacuated to other medical facilities.
