A theft at a historic building in Clare.

Renovations to the roof of La Vielle Maison in Meteghan have been ongoing.

Just over a year ago, the site won $10,000 in the ‘Next Great Save’ national contest.

Treasurer Nicole Pothier says 14 bundles of shingles were recently stolen.

“We’re going to finish the roof somehow, but right now we’re not sure how. It’s not worth anything to the person that stole the shingles. It has little value to anyone except us,” said Pothier.

Five rolls of tar paper and three rolls of ice and weather shield were also stolen.

Pothier says Meteghan RCMP have been contacted.

The building dates back to the late 1700’s and is the most well-preserved Acadian home in the area.

The hope was to have it ready for the World Acadian Congress this summer.
