SIU investigation underway into Friday’s ‘weapons call’

Ontario’s police watchdog has launched an investigation into city police following the discharge of a firearm.

A spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit says preliminary information has the investigation tied to Friday’s weapons call, which took place at the Thunder Centre around 4:30 p.m.

There officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to reports of an individual waving what appeared to be a handgun, prompting a massive response which included the Emergency Task and Canine Units.

One person was taken into custody as a result of the incident.

During the interaction the SIU spokesperson says a less-lethal firearm was discharged, but resulted in no serious injuries.

No further details are available at this time as investigators are still en route to the city at this time and are still awaiting evidence.
