Environmental protections are moving forward at the City of Thunder Bay Solid Waste and Recycling Facility.
City council has approved phase one of covering the west cell portion of the facility that has reached capacity.
The cover will enhance environmental protection at the site by reducing the amount of water that can leach into the waste.
When water gets into the waste it creates contaminated water called leachate that would need to be collected and treated.
The project is estimated to cost $1,034,459.86 and a contract has been awarded to Nadin Contracting who submitted the lowest tender and has previously completed similar contracts for the City.
This project is the beginning of closure work on the west cell at the facility and the second phase of closure is planned for 2026.
