More families to qualify for rebate

By Randy Thoms Mar 1, 2024 | 2:38 PM

The provincial government is allowing more families to be eligible for the Ontario Electricity Support Program.

The program provides rebates on electricity costs of between $35 and $75 each month, depending on household size.

Energy Minister Todd Smith says the income levels to be eligible are increasing by 35%, making the problem available to another 100,000 families.

“Our government is increasing our investment in the Ontario Electricity Support Program by $50 million to provide targeted support to those who need it most,” says Smith in a release.

For example, a four-person family with a combined maximum income of $65,000, after tax deductions, will receive a monthly rebate of $40.

Higher rebates of between $52 and $113 are available to customers who are Indigenous.

Hydro users apply to the program through the Ontario Energy Board.

There is no deadline to apply.
