Figure skating legends coming to Sussex for clinic

By Brad Perry Mar 1, 2024 | 1:41 PM

Two Canadian figure skating legends are taking to the ice in New Brunswick this weekend.

Elvis Stojko and Kurt Browning are hosting a skating clinic in the town of Sussex on Saturday.

Around 120 skaters have signed up, according to Brittany Gahan, president of the Sussex Skating Club.

“We still have a lot of people inquiring as well,” Gahan said in an interview. “We filled up the first day when we released the clinic.”

This is the first time that all three skating legends have been in the community for a clinic.

Sussex hosted its first clinic with Stojko back in February 2020 which saw about 80 youth participate.

“I had gone to New Glasgow to see him live, but unfortunately, there were no tickets available in the clinic for any New Brunswick skaters because it filled up so quickly,” said Gahan.

“That was when I decided to take this back to our board of directors because we should have these opportunities for youth in New Brunswick as well.”

Stojko’s wife, figure skater Gladys Orozco, will also be giving the skaters an ice session focusing on dance on ice.

In addition to skating with the stars, skaters will also participate in a yoga class, as well as a mind, health and nutrition class.

Gahan said she believes this event will mean a lot to the skaters that are taking part.

“Elvis and Kurt are still in the Stars on Ice program, so they still get to see these skaters competing, and their routines are phenomenal,” she said.

You can watch the legends in person at the 8th Hussars Sports Centre in Sussex.

Admission is $5 cash. A full clinic schedule can be found on the Sussex Skating Club’s Facebook page.
