Mariners gain valuable points toward playoff spot

The Yarmouth Mariners gained three of a possible four points at home.

They took on Summerside Saturday night, and had a 3-0 lead after two periods.

But the first-place Caps stormed back to win it 4-3 in a shootout.

The Mariners held off Campbellton 3-2 Sunday night, with Will Forbes making 53 saves for his first win as a Mariner.

Head Coach Laurie Barron assessed the weekend.

“We played well at times, but we had trouble putting 60 minutes together. We played well early against Summerside, but they’re a team that if you don’t put them away, they’ll come back. Getting a point out of them is huge. Tonight we were able to get the two points and found a way,” said Barron.

The Mariners now sit alone in second place in the division, three points ahead of Truro, Amherst and Pictou County.

There are five games left in the regular season.

“We’ll take each game one at a time. It’s going to come down to one of the last games, the division is so tight,” added Barron.

They hit the road for three games in New Brunswick, starting Thursday against Edmundston.
