Bill 124 repealed

By Randy Thoms Feb 23, 2024 | 1:02 PM

Bill 124 is no more.

The Ford government has repealed the wage-restricting legislation in its entirety through an Order in Council.

The move comes after two court rulings deeming it unconstitutional and infringing on workers’ rights to bargain.

“Repealing the Bill will solve the inequality of workers created by the recent court decision,” states the government’s release issued through the Treasury Board Secretariat.

The bill-imposed limits on annual wage increases of one per cent on public sector workers beginning in 2019.

Some sectors have since been awarded retroactive pay increases totaling 6.5%.

The Financial Accountability Office of Ontario reported in September 2022 that a successful court challenge of the Bill could cost the province $8.4 million in retroactive pay increases.
