Example of a pallet shelter (Province of Nova Scotia)

Public meeting on safety Wednesday in Lower Sackville

By Caitlin Snow Feb 21, 2024 | 12:34 PM

It will be the first of four gatherings organized by the Safety Sackville Community Stakeholders.

They are in response to last week’s meeting at the Kinsmen Community Centre to discuss the 19 pallet shelters coming soon to the Beacon House parking lot at 124 Metropolitan Avenue.

The Beacon House is a 24-bed shelter, open 24/7, in the former Elizabethan Catholic Church and already has eight micro-shelters on its property.

It was packed and over 100 people turned away February 15, when the Beacon House facilitated an information session.

The Community Stakeholders say, “there were very emotional, personal and heartfelt accounts of victimization and vandalism,” with many leaving the meeting feeling unsafe, unheard and angry.

Residents have expressed a lot of concern over the proximity of the pallets to the local high school and other play areas.

Jim Gunn a representative with the Beacon House, says there will be another meeting at a later date once they figure out how to ‘constructively’ ease concerns of community members.

In the meantime, tonight’s meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. at the Cineplex.
