VIDEO: Saint John police seek suspects after tent encampment fire

By Brad Perry Feb 20, 2024 | 3:41 PM

Saint John police have released video of what is believed to be suspects and a vehicle involved in setting a fire at a tent encampment.

Emergency crews were called to the encampment between Waterloo and Exmouth streets around 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses reported hearing something hit the tent before it caught fire and then heard a vehicle speed away.

A 22-second video released by police on Tuesday afternoon shows a car stopping near one of the tents.

One person gets out of the front passenger seat and appears to walk toward one of the tents.

Flames can be seen several seconds later as the individual walks back toward the car.

There were four people inside the tent when the fire started, but police said they were not injured.

Fire crews managed to keep the flames from spreading to nearby tents and buildings.

Anyone who knows the identity of the suspects is asked to call the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-22-28477.

Detectives are also still seeking additional witnesses and video footage of the fire.
