Mariners put together 6 point weekend

A six-point weekend for the Yarmouth Mariners.

They capped off three straight wins with a 3-1 victory over Pictou County Monday afternoon in front of nearly 1,400 fans at Mariners Centre.

Local player Sam Hope had two goals, and goaltender Thomas Fontaine was the game’s first star with 39 saves.

This followed a 3-1 win in Truro on Saturday night, and an 8-3 victory at home over Amherst Friday that saw Liam Noble pot a hat-trick.

Head Coach Laurie Barron says the team has found their groove.

“We’ve only given up two goals against in the last two games. The goaltending and defense has been great, and our forwards are scoring by committee,” said Barron.

Yarmouth now sits tied for second in the division with the Bearcats, four points inside a playoff spot over the Crushers.

Barron acknowledges it will be a close race to the playoffs.

“You see Truro and Amherst getting wins, so it was important for us to win today (Monday). There are no easy games in the league this year.”

Fontaine got the win in all three games on the weekend, and the team has won four in a row overall.

Barron says he’s been excellent.

“It seems like the bigger the game, the better he is. He’s a guy that competes and gives you a chance to win everyday.”

The Mariners are 6-1-0-1 in the month of February, there are seven games left in the regular season.

They’ll host Summerside this Saturday and Campbellton on Sunday.
