UNB Saint John prepares to host volleyball championships

By Brad Perry Feb 16, 2024 | 4:51 AM

Saint John will host some of Atlantic Canada’s top university volleyball teams next weekend.

UNB Saint John will play host to the ACAA volleyball championships from Feb. 23-25.

It is the first time the school has hosted the championship event in several years.

Josh Fleck, the school’s varsity coordinator, said there has been a lot of work happening behind the scenes.

“It’s taken a long time to prepare. We’ve built off previous championships and tweaked it to make it our own,” Fleck said in an interview.

Both teams have been putting in a lot of work to ensure they are prepared to host the event, he said.

Sydney Flower, captain of the UNB Saint John women’s volleyball team, said there is building excitement as the regular season winds down.

“It’s kind of put a different kind of pressure on us to do well because we’re hosting so we want to be there,” said Flower.

“It makes us want to do well because we don’t want to host playoffs and then not be there.

The top six women’s and top four men’s teams in the association will advance to the playoffs.

We will not find out the teams or their seedings until the regular season ends on Monday.

In the meantime, Fleck said they are still looking for volunteers to come out and lend a hand.

“There’s numerous roles to be filled. If we can fill them all, great. If not, I’m more than confident that we can make it work,” he said.

Games will take place at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre at UNB Saint John. Tickets are available at TD Station.
