Solidarity rally outside Java Blend on North St Saturday

By Caitlin Snow Feb 9, 2024 | 12:01 PM

Union SEIU Local 2 says they are calling on solidarity after filing an Unfair Labour Practice complaint against the local coffee chain.

Java Blend laid off 25 per cent of their workers last month, including four who organized a union drive.

The union says the company cast their votes in June 2023, but “these ballots remain sealed because of Java Blend’s objections over which employees should be included in the union.”

SEIU claims the terminations were illegal.

In addition, the union says, the nine employees let go, were asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which would give away their rights to any legal challenges.

Java Blend says the layoffs were due to financial reasons.

The rally is at 1p.m. and NDP Leader Claudia Chender will be on hand to speak.
