Lutsen Lodge has burned to the ground following a Tuesday morning fire.

According to officials Cook County Dispatch was notified of a fire alarm at Lutsen Resort, at 12:24 a.m.

Staff on site reported smoke coming from the floor in the lobby area.

Fire crews were mobilized from Lutsen, Tofte, Grand Marais, Maple Hill, Gunflint, Finland, Silver Bay, and Grand Portage, along with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Photos posted to social media show the building completely engulfed, with a post from the Historic Lutsen Lodge Facebook page confirming the building being a total loss.

“The Historic Lutsen Lodge has been taken by a devastating fire this evening. A total loss to the lodge building.”

The post notes fires also occurred in 1949 and 1951.

Despite the devastation, there is some optimism and hope.

“The amazing memories made here are in our hearts as we begin the heavy weighted process to (build) back better.”

The State Fire Marshall is now investigating the cause of the fire.

No guests were onsite at the time of the blaze and no injuries have been reported.
