BMHS presents Disney’s High School Musical

By Tara Clow Feb 2, 2024 | 12:38 PM

Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan and the whole class from High School Musical are set to perform.

They’ll be on stage at Bernice MacNaughton High from February 14 to 17.

“Not having done a musical at our school for five years, we were looking for something that would be a lot of fun and would hopefully draw in big support from our community. We thought it would be a great way to dive back into the musical history that we have here,” says Teacher and Director Rebecca Moore.

Evan George Joby plays Troy, a role he had to get into character for, “This is the first time that I’m actually not backstage singing for the characters but being a character while singing. Troy is more like a jockey person, but I’m more like a person who sings. I don’t do a lot of sports, so this kind of was like playing a completely different person.”

Sara Hackett was cast in the role of Sharpay, but it wasn’t one she specifically chose when auditioning.

“I really didn’t have a preference as to who I got to be in High School Musical. Sharpay is a really interesting character to play. She’s really sassy and she gets to boss her brother around, and she has the best wardrobe. I’m the highest budget,” Hackett says.

The production includes a whole cast of students, musicians, and those working behind the scenes..

Auditions for the musical were held at the end of September, and the students have been rehearsing since then, four afternoons a week, including lunchtime and after school.

“One of our school improvement goals is community. I really can’t think of anything within our school, that better helps address that goal than a musical,” Moore says.  “Bringing people together and creating a family-like atmosphere. It has been really neat watching friendships develop between people. Now we’re going to present this thing that we’ve all created and it’ll be a wonderful memory. I know that they’ll carry it through the rest of their lives.”

For those who aren’t familiar with Disney’s High School Musical, Hackett told us what it is about.

“It’s really a show about the status quo, about high school and how everyone has a little box that they come in, and they’re automatically sorted into. So, it’s all about these stereotypes and how we can break out of the mold.”

Moore was a former student at Bernice MacNaughton and was also in their first musical ever, so she’s very proud of the hard work the students have been putting in and the support from staff.

“I’m just really looking forward to seeing them present it and watching them shine.”

The production of Disney’s High School Musical will be performed at Bernice MacNaughton High School on February 14, 15, 16, and 17.

Tickets are available now through SchoolCash online or contact the school directly for more information.
