Volunteer fire crews rescue two deer in Antigonish

Some tense moments after two deer fell through the ice in Antigonish.

Volunteer firefighters from the town and county responded to the call in Lanark along with officials from the Department of Natural Resources.

Crews were able to get a rescue team out on the water to help bring the deer back to dry land.

They described it as a challenging rescue, but they were able to save them.

Officials are using the operation as a reminder to be careful around water and to make sure ice is at least 10 centimetres thick before venturing out for a walk or skate.
