School boards discussing solar eclipse

By Randy Thoms Jan 31, 2024 | 3:32 PM

School boards across northwestern Ontario are expected to make a decision soon regarding a solar eclipse on April 8.

Most of eastern Canada and central United States will see a full eclipse, while other areas will view a partial eclipse.

It is expected to occur at the end of the school day.

It has prompted some school boards in southern Ontario to cancel classes for safety reasons.

Others in the United States are doing the same.

Rainy River District School Board’s Executive Director Heather Campbell says they are working with area boards on a common strategy.

The boards responsible for schools in the Kenora, Dryden and Rainy River Districts operate on the same schedule.

Campbell says they plan to communicate their plans to parents soon.

She adds there are no plans to change the date of a professional development day as has been done by some Toronto area boards.
