Police standoff leads to numerous charges

The Thunder Bay Police Service has taken one person into custody after a standoff on the city’s north side.

Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Dufferin Street shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a disturbance.

When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect barricaded themself inside the residence leading to the standoff.

After making numerous attempts to have the suspect surrender, officers entered the residence just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday. The suspect was eventually arrested after initially refusing to comply with officers.

The suspect was found in possession of suspected illicit substances, more than $6,000 in Canadian currency and a number of firearms.

A 38-year-old has been charged with the following:

  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition x5
  • Obstructing Police
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x2
  • Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of a Schedule IV Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking

The accused appeared in court later Tuesday and has been remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
