It’s a nice day to stay inside, as our first nor’easter of the season has arrived.
It came ashore in southwestern Nova Scotia late Sunday night, making Monday morning’s commute an awful mess.
All schools in the province are cancelled, many offices are closed or delayed opening.
Roads across the province are snow covered, and many areas remain under a snowfall warning.

StFX will close Monday, January 29, at 6 a.m. and reopen at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30. Essential services will remain open (Morrison Hall, security, snow removal)
All classes are cancelled at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, including online classes
Dalhousie campuses in Halifax and Truro are closed
Mount Saint Vincent University is closed
NSCAD is closed
University of King’s College is closed
NSCC has cancelled classes its Pictou and Strait Area Campus’ along with the Wagmatcook Learning Centre
NSCC Metro campuses (Ivany, Aviation, IT and Akerley) are closed
NSCC Lunenburg campus is closed
NSCC Marconi campus is closed
NSCC Burridge (Yarmouth), Shelburne and Digby Learning Centre are closed

The Municipality of Shelburne’s office will be closed.

Bay Ferries crossings of the Fundy Rose between Digby and Saint John have been cancelled for Monday.
Delayed openings/postponements:
The Canada Games Centre in Halifax will delay opening until 2 p.m.
Garbage collection has been cancelled for the HRM.
Municipal offices in Halifax will open at 10 a.m.
Monday’s waste collection in the Town of Bridgewater and Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will be Saturday, February 3.
The Municipality of Chester’s office will open at 10:30 a.m.
The Municipality of Yarmouth’s office in Hebron will delay opening until 10 a.m.
Yarmouth Town Hall will delay opening until 10 a.m.
Municipality of Digby office will delay opening until 10 a.m.
Update from the Halifax Regional Municipality:
Municipal offices
All municipal offices, including in-person Customer Service Centres, are delaying opening until noon. An update on a further delay or closure will be provided by 11 a.m.
Employees who can work from home are being asked to do so.
All essential services, including 311, winter operations and Halifax Transit are maintaining operations.
Safety is the municipality’s top priority. Delaying opening will facilitate clearing efforts by crews and ensure a safer commute for our employees and residents.
Parks & Recreation
The Halifax Public Gardens are closed today.
Many municipal recreation facilities are delaying opening today. A decision will be made at 10 a.m. (with potential re-opening at 12 p.m.) regarding whether rentals, facilities and programming activities will continue as scheduled.

Solid Waste
Curbside collection has been cancelled today due to the forecasted winter storm. Recovery collection will occur on Saturday, Feb. 3.

The Halifax Ground Search and Rescue team are conducting wellness checks today to assess the safety of anyone who chooses not to leave an outdoor sheltering location.
