A 54-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being struck by a marked police vehicle in Saint John.

Police said the crash happened westbound on City Road shortly after 2 a.m. Friday.

“The man was transported to and remains in hospital with serious injuries,” the police force said in a news release.

The road was shut down for several hours between Hay Market Square and Garden Street while traffic reconstruction processed the scene.

According to police, the officer remains on active duty while the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) investigates.

SiRT investigates matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and domestic violence or other matters of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer.

Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid after an investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact SiRT at 1-850-450-2010.
