6 displaced after Saint John fire

Six people have been displaced after a fire damaged a two-storey building in Saint John’s old north end.

Fire crews were called to the two-unit building on Kennedy Place shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Platoon Chief Craig Melvin.

“On arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from both the first and second floor of the building,” said Melvin.

“They made quick work of the attack and ended up knocking the fire down pretty quick.”

It took fire crews about an hour and a half to get the fire under control and two hours to fully extinguish it, said Melvin.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the platoon chief said it appears to have started in a kitchen.

“There’s extensive fire damage to the kitchen on the main level and the kitchen on the second level, and smoke damage and water damage throughout the rest of the building,” said Melvin.

No injuries were reported among either civilians or firefighters, he said.
