A Saint John theatre is receiving government funding for programming and renovations at the historic space.

Imperial Theatre will get more than $328,000 in combined funding from the provincial and federal governments.

More than $258,000 of that will come from federal programs, according to Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long.

“$170,000 is for the Imperial Presents Showcase, which offers a wide range of theatre, dance, comedy, circus, and musical performances,” said Long.

“It also features outreach activities including artist talks, puppetry, community jams, and school workshops, which will ensure the whole community can take part and enjoy arts and culture.”

The remaining $88,000 in federal funding will be used for renovations at the facility, according to Long.

It includes new front doors, a theatre stage cloth, renovated gender-neutral washrooms, and the purchase of a small boom lift.

Mel Norton, president of the Imperial Theatre board of directors, said these enhancements are more than just physical upgrades.

“With automated doors and universal washrooms, we’re ensuring that the Imperial Theatre remains a welcoming space for all,” said Norton.

The provincial government is contributing $70,000 through the Regional Development Corporation.
