George Jeffrey Children's Centre Sign - CJ Goater
The George Jeffrey Children’s Centre, the city of Thunder Bay and Lakehead University have partnered together to increase the awareness of sledge skating in Thunder Bay.
Sledge Skating is an accessible form of skating where the participant uses a sledge that has double blades on the bottom and sticks with picks at the end to propel themselves across the ice.
The Centre’s clients will be demonstrating sledge skating during the second intermission of the Thunderwolves Hockey game on January 12.
“It’s a really big opportunity for them just to be able to do something that most other kids are able to do and just like a special spot for them to showcase their skills,” highlighted Stacey Collie the Recreation and Leisure Facilitator at the George Jeffrey Children’s Centre “It’s also for anybody, like anybody is able to get into a sledge and go out on the ice and sledge skate or do sledge hockey. So it’s really a very inclusive activity for everybody.”
The City of Thunder Bay will be advertising their public sledge skate days during this event and there will also be a booth in the lobby showing other accessible sports offered in Thunder Bay.
