Police ask public to stay off lakes and ponds, ice still not safe

By Caitlin Snow Jan 9, 2024 | 3:31 PM

Halifax police are reminding the public to stay off lakes and ponds.

They say there is thin ice and open water in many areas throughout the municipality.

The ice thickness testing program has not yet begun this year as it’s not safe for staff to be on the ice.

Given the up and down temperatures we’ve been getting, police are urging caution.

Police say when testing resumes, the guide can be found at https://www.halifax.ca/parks-recreation/programs-activities/skating/ice-thickness.

The guide lists the body of water, the specific location that was checked, the ice thickness at that location and the date it was checked.
