Construction drawings for Riverview Rec Centre approved

The Riverview Rec Centre has taken a step closer to reality.

The town Council unanimously approved construction drawings, including an outdoor skate park, and issued the project for tender.

Before the vote, Mayor Andrew Leblanc asked questions regarding security and challenges with less than desirable activities other communities have experienced with outdoor skate parks.

“That was one of the key design elements, and specifically its placement on the site. It’s really close to the building. It would be attached to the big camera monitors and lighting has been a primary consideration,” responded Director of Park and Recreation David Shea.

He also reassured the Mayor explaining that they’ve reviewed other sites in Ontario that have the same model and are close to a site with around 200,000 visitors per year.

“That alone is a very strong detriment to crime, criminal activity, and vandalism that could occur on that site.”

Shea adds that the intent is also to have programmed elements to it, with learn-to-skateboard programs.

Renderings of the outdoor skate park are currently being designed and will be presented to the Town Council over the coming months.

The $46 million centre will also include pools, a walking track, and a fieldhouse.

A groundbreaking on the site next to Mill Creek Nature Park is expected to happen sometime in 2024.
