Colder weather on the way for January after mild December: Weather Network

By Caitlin Snow Jan 3, 2024 | 12:39 PM

Keep your warm clothes and shovels handy, winter weather is on the way, according to the Weather Network.

The forecaster says, winter, which started December 21, has felt more like late fall, with southern Ontario and Atlantic Canada having one of their warmest December’s on record, due to a strong El Nino.

However, the second or third week of January will bring a very active storm track, from the Great Lakes to Atlantic Canada. This, they say, is because heavy snow and ice can still fall with above normal temperatures. Near-normal or above-normal temperatures are still expected for January, but considering it’s the coldest month of the year, it’s still pretty cold.

In mid-January, Arctic air is expected to hit Ontario and Quebec for several days.

Later in the month they expect a typical ‘January thaw’, before colder weather returns.
