NOSM University is looking for families with young children.

It is to help provide students with hands-on experience in pediatric care.

Erika Dzuba, the Standardized Patient Program Coordinator at NOSM’s Thunder Bay campus, says they would like families with newborns and infants between six to nine months old.

“The reason we’re looking specifically for those age groups is because of the milestones that they’re going to be at that point so that the students can start to identify them,” explains Dzuba.

Dzuba says the sessions with students will include a short interview with parents about the pregnancy and delivery.

A physical exam, supervised by a licensed physician, will be done on the child.

“They work in small groups of three or four students, so it’s all supervised. It’s nice and chill. We do a nice and calm environment so that moms get a chance to breastfeed, if necessary, or change a diaper, that kind of thing,” says Dzuba.

There are three sessions taking place at NOSM University’s Thunder Bay campus.

One for newborns born after November 10, 2023, takes place on January 9 from 9-10:30 a.m.

For babies born on April 1 to July 15, 2023, a session occurs on January 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A final session for babies born in March to October happens on January 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
