More heavy rain, strong winds possible next week

By Brad Perry Dec 15, 2023 | 3:31 PM

We could be in for another round of heavy rain and strong winds to start next week.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for southern and central New Brunswick.

It warns that a potent low-pressure system is expected to develop over New England and approach the Maritimes late Sunday.

“At this time, there remains considerable uncertainty in regards to which specific counties will see the heaviest rain and strongest winds,” said the statement.

“It is likely that this will be an impactful weather event for areas that have already seen a lot of precipitation recently.”

Latest forecasts suggest 40 to 60 millimetres of rain could fall by Tuesday, with southeasterly winds gusting to near 80 kilometres per hour.

The national weather agency encourages residents to check for updated alerts and forecasts this weekend as the storm evolves.

A similar storm earlier this week knocked out power to more than 50,000 homes and businesses — some for several days.
