Basketball parents in the Halifax area, will not be watching their kids at basketball games this weekend.
In a bold move, the Metro Basketball Association has banned all spectators this weekend only, in what they call, a warning, due to officials receiving negativity from fans, coaches and players.
In a letter to parents, one league President says the purpose of the ban is to send a strong message that youth sport is a privilege, and so is watching. They say several officials have already left the league due to spectator abuse with dozens of player/spectator suspensions.
This the first-time parents have been banned from watching their kids’ games, since COVID.
Youth ages 8-18 participate in teams within the MBA, that range from U10-U18.
Spectators will be allowed back in the New Year.
