Snowmobiles to gain access to snow covered roads and shoulders

By Caitlin Snow Dec 13, 2023 | 2:16 PM

A new pilot project for snowmobilers in Lunenburg and Inverness counties.

Starting Friday, snowmobilers will be able to use roads and road-shoulders that are snow and/or ice covered in three areas:

Margaree Centre and Big Intervale, Inverness County, and New Germany, Lunenburg County.

“This pilot project supports safe and responsible use of snowmobiles on specific roadways at approved locations,” said Public Works Minister Kim Masland. “This will enable greater connectivity for snowmobile users and support businesses that serve outdoor enthusiasts in these communities.”

There will be specific rules to follow under new Snow Vehicle Pilot Project Regulations, and if broken, will be subject to penalty.

The pilot will help determine whether snowmobiles will be added to the Road Trails Act that allows off-highway vehicles access to roads at approved locations.

The pilot runs until March 31.
