Maple syrup production reaches lowest level in five years

Maple syrup production has reached its lowest level in five years.

Canada exports millions of dollars of maple syrup every year, but according to Statistics Canada, due to poor weather conditions, production has plummeted.

Stats Can says 10.4 million gallons was harvested this year; a 40 per cent decrease from a record-high production in 2022 and it’s due to bad weather such as severe storms and temperature fluctuations.

In the first three quarters of 2023, 7.7 million gallons of maple products were exported, down 8.7 per cent from 2022.

Production was down in New Brunswick by 35 per cent, Ontario by nearly 15 per cent and in Canada’s top maple syrup producing province, Quebec by 41 per cent with 9.4 gallons.

Maple syrup exports in Canada were valued at $515 million in 2020.
