Town of Riverview explains lights display outage

By Tara Clow Dec 12, 2023 | 12:58 PM

Some of the lights along Riverview’s riverfront have gone dark as of late.

The Town found out why.

Community Relations Director David Shea says it’s due to rain, “The riverfront lighting system typically shorts out during wet and slushy weather.  This is due to ground fault circuit interrupters.”

He says the push button resets and stops the circuit when water seeps in.

“There are a lot of intricacies in where the wires are spliced together and electrical tape is also used so we have the exact amount of lights needed for each tree,” Shea adds.

Unfortunately, the system shorts out when there is rainy weather.

“Once things freeze and there’s more dry air, we won’t see as many outages,” Shea adds.

He also stressed that it is not due to vandalism or theft this season.

Lights Up Riverview is featured on the riverfront until January 7th.
