Halifax Explosion Memorial Service to happen Wednesday morning

By Caitlin Snow Dec 5, 2023 | 12:54 PM

Residents are invited to the annual Halifax Explosion Memorial Service tomorrow.

It will be at the Bell Tower in the Fort Needham Memorial Park at 9am.

The Halifax Explosion happened on Dec 6, 1917 when two ships-the French munitions ship, the Mont Blanc, and the Norwegian relief ship, the Imo-collided in the Halifax Harbour.

Over 2,000 people were killed and 9,000 more were injured.

At the time it was the deadliest man-made explosion, with almost all of north-end Halifax destroyed.

The memorial will honour the loss of life and resilience of our community.

Naval ships across the Dockyard will also sound their whistles for one minute at 9:04 a.m.
