By News Dec 1, 2023 | 1:40 PM

No firm decision yet on whether l’Universite de Moncton will get a new name.

An independent report was released today, for informative and technical purposes, examining the sociohistorical, political, social, reputational, legal and economic aspects of a university name change and its potential implications.

The report is called: Dénomination de l’Université de Moncton : un état des lieux,

Report Co-Author Stéphanie Chouinard says some of the risks include discoverability, “When you change a name, particularly if you look at browsers online, the browsers won’t necessarily find you for a few months after you change the name.”

The report also revealed a cost of over 4.5-million dollars, “Physical changes to all of the buildings on the three campuses, because ultimately we need to change all of the names on all of the doors and the big signs ins front of the campuses.”

“I would like to thank Stéphanie Chouinard and Maurice Basque for their work and commitment to this mandate,” said Denis Mallet, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Université de Moncton. “From the beginning, we promised to make this process public and transparent, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far. The Board of Governors of the Université does not take this process lightly, and we must ensure that we are well equipped to make thoughtful decisions.”

The Board of Governors will review the report at its December 9th meeting.
