Just after 9 a.m. on November 24, 2023, Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services responded to a report of a house fire on Trowbridge Rd.

Upon arrival, fire crews reported that smoke was coming from the eaves of the home, and the windows were blackened from the smoke.

Fire crews searched the smoke-filled home for occupants and started extinguishing the fire that was found in the laundry/electrical room.

The fire was under control just after 10 and declared out at roughly 11.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire but, unfortunately, two cats and a dog perished in the fire.

Ten SFES firefighters and five Pass Lake firefighters responded to the call, along with support from Superior North EMS, Ontario Provincial Police, and Hydro One.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

SFES is reminding the public that working smoke alarms save lives and ensure every member of the family knows the home escape plan in an emergency evacuation situation.
