KPDSB still has the help wanted sign out

By Tim Davidson Nov 22, 2023 | 1:07 PM

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says it’s still hiring teachers, education assistants and support staff for their schools.

Christy Radbourne is the Director of Education and says almost all the communities in the region are short staff.

“One of the greatest challenges in this region, particularly in the smaller areas. is housing,” points out Radbourne.

“It quite difficult for even teachers and education workers to re-locate their lives to places where the housing is quite limited.”

Radbourne adds it’s not just  teachers they are having trouble attracting, but education assistants and support staff.

“It’s concerning.  It’s not even so much that we are getting one or two applicants.  A lot of our postings, in a lot of our schools aren’t getting applicants.  We are hiring!”

Radbourne says the KP board isn’t alone in the teacher shortage, as almost every board in the province is in a similar position.
