Help name the snow plows for Moncton and Riverview

By Tara Clow Nov 20, 2023 | 9:03 AM

The plows in Moncton and Riverview are getting names.

A Name the Snow Plow contest has been launched.

“A lot of other municipalities across Canada have done similar community engagement and naming their plows and different vehicles in their fleet. We thought, what a great idea. It’s something we think our residents would really get behind, have some fun and be creative,” says Town of Riverview Spokesperson Ashly Barron.

Names can be submitted until November 22nd, and from there they will narrow down all of the submissions to the top 20.

Barron adds they’re just really excited to see what residents come up with.

“We think it would be great if we could have a nice mix of English, French and Indigenous names to add to our plows, so that’s basically the only criteria. Obviously, if names are offensive, then we aren’t going to include those on our plows.  But I have no doubt in my mind that our residents are going to come up with some creative and fun names for our plows,” adds City of Moncton Spokesperson Michelle Roy.

Every year during the winter season, there’s always a lot of talk about snow clearing, and Roy says a ‘Name the Snowplow’ campaign makes things a little more fun, “Whenever we post on social media, instead of just putting a graphic of a snow plow, we can take a picture of our plows with the name on the side, and the post can state the name and that they are going to be plowing today.”

Numerous entries have already been received through the 91.9 The Bend website, but Barron says there’s still time to get submissions in.

“We’ve seen some really great names. One of my favourites so far is Obi-Wan Clean Snowbee.  I think that’s just great as a Star Wars fan,” Barron adds.

Seven plows in Moncton and seven plows in Riverview will receive names.
