National Indigenous Veterans Day

By Kelli Rickard Nov 8, 2023 | 12:04 PM

November 8th is National Indigenous Veterans Day.

Commemorated since 1994, it’s a day to recognize and acknowledge the many achievements and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples – not only to Canada’s war efforts but to its peacekeeping reputation.

Indigenous soldiers have served in numerous roles, including as snipers, scouts, and code talkers in this country’s military efforts for over 200 years.

Despite their contributions, they endured hatred and racism during conflicts, and did not receive the same benefits when they returned home as non-Indigenous veterans.

The Minister of National Defence, Bill Blair, marked the occasion by encouraging all Canadians to learn more about Indigenous contributions to our military history.
