Christmas Tree for Boston coming from Stewiacke

By Steve MacArthur Nov 1, 2023 | 12:28 PM

A time-honoured tradition as a show of gratitude following the Halifax Explosion will come from Colchester County.

This year’s Tree for Boston will come from Stewiacke and will be donated by Betty Gourley.

Gourley planted the tree 40 years ago and it has been decorated almost every year, until it became too tall.

“We’re very pleased and honoured that it’s this year’s Tree for Boston, in thanks for their help after the Halifax Explosion. My husband was very community minded, and our two sons and I try to carry on that spirit in our lives. We sincerely hope the people of Boston enjoy this tree as much as we have over the years.” said Gourley

When Bostonians learned of the explosion in 1917 they quickly sent supplies via train to help in the aftermath creating the unbreakable bond between the two cities.

The tree cutting ceremony will be held on November 15 and will be lit in Boston at the end of the month.

The first Tree for Boston was donated by Joseph Slauenwhite from Lunenburg County.
