More than 200 residential units proposed for east Saint John

A proposed development could bring more than 200 new residential units to Saint John’s east side.

The city is considering a proposal for land at 1440 Loch Lomond Road, near Bon Accord Drive.

It would include four apartment buildings with 52 units each, along with four townhouse clusters.

“I think rezoning will result in an excellent development that will increase the supply of new rental housing in Saint John,” developer Erik de Jong wrote in his application.

De Jong noted in his application that the city is facing an “extremely low” apartment rental vacancy rate.

As part of the process, he is seeking a municipal plan amendment from Urban Reserve to Stable Area and Stable Residential.

“Historically the land was agricultural in nature and used to farm market crops,” said de Jong.

The property is bordered by a few single-family dwellings to the west, a vacant commercial property that used to be a fuel station and convenience store to the northeast, vacant land to the east and single-family dwellings across Little River to the south.

Across Loch Lomond Road to the north is a church, multi-unit apartment buildings, a proposed multi-residential development, as well as a daycare and residence.

Written objections to the proposed amendment may be made to Common Council through the Common Clerk by Nov. 29.
