A 61-year-old man from Thorburn has been charged with second degree murder.

RCMP say the man ran through the woods with an axe after attempting to break into a home on Greenwood St, around 9am Monday, prompting an emergency alert in Pictou, Antigonish and Colchester Counties.

RCMP say they found a victim in the suspects home on Greenwood St suffering from serious injuries.  She was taken to hospital where she later died.

Colchester County District RCMP, the Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), RCMP Police Dog Services and RCMP Air Services were called the scene to assist.

The suspect was found behind Greenwood St in the woods around 11:25am, also seriously injured and was taken to hospital with police escort.

The investigation has been turned over to the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit and is being assisted by the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office.

The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court November 1.
