Local high school students to get hands-on trade experience

NBCC has teamed up with Skills Canada and Envision Saint John so high school students can jumpstart their careers.

The Try-A-Trade event will take place at NBCC’s Saint John campus this Thursday. More than 850 students from 12 high schools in the region will attend.

Local companies participating range from masonry, roofing, carpentry and others that were impacted by COVID-19 when tradespeople had to retire or find other employment.

Envision interim CEO Andrew Beckett sees a positive outlook for the program.

“We’re trying to make sure the local student population knows that there are options for them, and the trades are a very viable option,” said Beckett.

In a news release, NBCC president and CEO Mary Butler said they are proud to collaborate on this impactful initiative.

“Our school is dedicated to nurturing hands-on learning experiences that light up the imaginations of our future leaders, and The Try-a-Trade event not only introduces students to the vast potential of trades careers but also showcases the tangible skills that build our communities,” said Butler.
