Recycling changes at the Transfer Station

By Tim Davidson Oct 11, 2023 | 2:46 PM

Some changes have been made to Kenora’s recycling system.

Bill Mundy is the Manager of Utilities and says it’s now a one stop shop for recyclables.

“It’s mimicking exactly what the curbside collection program is like,” Mundy points out.

“You just put everything into one bin, except glass.  Glass is still separate as of now.  But regularly accepted historically recycled materials can go into one bin.”

Mundy says the changes went into effect on October 1st, when Circular Materials, a producer funded group, took over recycling operations from the province.

“Circular Materials pays us to collect recycling now.  That’s one of the changes under the blue box program.  So the province is out of recycling and it’s been passed on to the big companies that produce these materials and now they are responsible for collecting and processing recycling.”

Mundy adds there is a three year phase in of the new recycling service, and Kenora is part of the first wave.
