Inverness RCMP is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Route 19 near Margaree Forks.

Crews responded on Friday to a report of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 19 near Margaree Forks involving a GMC SUV and a Toyota Prius.

Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions prior to collision and resulted in both vehicles in the ditch with the SUV overturned.

The rear passenger of the Prius, a 78-year-old Timberlea man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver and passenger, both women from Halifax, incurred non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 41-year-old woman from Cheticamp, was transported to hospital by EHS with apparent non-life-threatening injury. Three youths also in the SUV appeared uninjured.

A collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

The roadway reopened after being closed for several hours.
