New ophthalmology microscope being announced at TBRHSC - CJ Goater

The Lions Vision Care Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre announced they have received a new ophthalmology microscope.

The microscope is an essential piece of equipment as it is used to perform cataract procedures and glaucoma surgeries. The microscope can also be used for the repair of traumatic eye injuries.

The microscope cost $310,000 but was funded by donors, including a large $275,941 donation from the Lions Clubs and Lions International.

The Lions Club has donated almost 1 million dollars to ophthalmology at the Health Sciences Centre since 1998.

The previous microscope was 15 years old and at risk of breaking down, with its replacement parts being very difficult to find. Without a new microscope, the risk of service interruptions at the Vision Centre was always present.

Dr Chris Francis explained the benefits of the microscope go beyond additional reliability, “The optics of microscopes have greatly improved, the enhanced 3D eye view is really enhanced making surgeries easier and, more importantly, safer for complicated or challenging cases.”
