Seniors Minister excited about new long-term care homes in N.S.

The province plans to open 34 new nursing homes over the next 4 years.

The first new centre opened in Digby County on Friday.

Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Barbara Adams says they’re focusing on infrastructure and staffing in their strategic plan.

“Two sides of this have to happen together, in order to make sure the residents of these nursing homes have the staff and the best care possible,” said Adams.

Their goal is to add 1,200 new long-term care rooms and replace another 2,300 rooms.

Every new room will be for a single occupant, and have its own private bathroom.

“It’s everything everyone has wanted for a long time. To go from 8,000 to 9,200 beds is a dramatic increase for those waiting for long-term care,” added Adams.

The new builds include 9 in the Western Zone alone.
