Input sought for proposed small modular nuclear reactor project

The provincial government is seeking your input as it prepares to assess a proposed small modular nuclear reactor project.

NB Power wants to install an ARC-100 Clean Technology reactor at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

The environment minister recently announced that the proposed project would undergo a comprehensive environmental impact assessment.

But before that review can happen, the province needs to develop project-specific guidelines to address the scope of the review.

“The regular environmental impact assessment process is a long-standing mechanism for the environmental review of projects in New Brunswick,” Environment Minister Gary Crossman said in a news release.

“The comprehensive review being used for this project is a five-step process that allows members of First Nations and the public to provide their input at various stages of the review and is vital to the process.”

Public submissions opened on Thursday and are being accepted until Oct. 28. It is anticipated the final guidelines will be posted online about a month later.
