N.B. announces mammogram self-referral program

By Brad Perry Sep 29, 2023 | 12:41 PM

New Brunswick women in their 40s will soon be able to self-refer for a mammogram.

The provincial government is expanding its cancer screening program starting next year.

Officials said while breast cancer is not as common in younger women, it can be more aggressive.

“With early detection comes less aggressive treatments and a better quality of life for the patient and their family,” said Sherry Wilson, the minister responsible for addictions and mental health services.

The program takes into consideration women who may not have a primary health-care provider, officials said.

Eligible participants will be able to self-refer by contacting one of the screening sites in their area.
